Members of the team from retirement living provider, Platinum Skies, launched a kitchen takeover at Poole’s Genesis Centre recently to support local charity Routes to Roots.
Supporting our local community
A group of four staff from the Community, Sales and Marketing teams prepared, cooked and served a tasty lunch of sausages, mash, beans and fried onions for around 40 people who Routes to Roots support. There were lots of potatoes to peel, but the lunch service ran smoothly, thanks to centre manager Ben and volunteers Caroline, Janet and Jenny who supported the Platinum Skies team onsite.

Ben Sargent said “I was delighted to welcome some of the Platinum Skies team to prepare and serve lunch at the Genesis Centre. For a small charity such as ourselves the positive contribution of businesses from the local community are vitally important to the work we do, whether it be through fundraising, donations of food, clothes or their time. The 'takeovers' by businesses such as Platinum Skies not only helps Routes to Roots but hopefully gives those staff participating an insight to some of the challenges people are facing and a hands-on experience of the positive work the charity does.”
Andrew Bryant, Area Community Manager at Platinum Skies said “Routes to Roots is an amazing charity which supports so many people here in Poole with such limited resources. Having the opportunity to prepare and serve lunch for them was a really fun and rewarding experience. I’m grateful that I was able to give my time to help out in the kitchen. Thankfully, everyone enjoyed the food and the team and I left feeling that we’d helped make a big difference to their day”.
Routes to Roots supporting the homeless in Poole
Routes to Roots supports rough sleepers, vulnerably housed (sofa surfers or in B&Bs) and newly housed (formerly homeless) adults in Poole. They believe everyone should have access to basic necessities, and everyone deserves to feel hope. They pride themselves on treating people with kindness, empathy and creating a friendly and welcoming environment. Routes to Roots aims to meet the immediate needs of each individual, to help them build support networks with peers and to give them access to the support they need to move forward.
In March 2022, Routes to Roots opened Poole’s first building solely dedicated to helping the town’s homeless and vulnerably housed, at the Genesis Centre on Hill Street. The centre has become a hub for support available locally from charities, churches and the local authorities – a one-stop place of change. In 2022, the charity also celebrated their 20th anniversary and won the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
