The benefits of volunteering
The thing is, volunteering is beneficial. It gets you out and about, it lets you meet new people from all walks of life, it gives you a sense of achievement and it’s great for retirees. One of the best things about volunteering is that it can give you a chance to experience things that you never could when you were working and allows you to give back to your local community.
‘There’s good evidence that volunteering brings benefits to both the person volunteering and the people and organisations they support’
Studies have shown that volunteering in later life helps to decrease depression by giving you more opportunities to be around others and it can also help with your ability to cope with ill health. Volunteering has also been shown to increase your independence and help to improve your relationships with your wider family, so why wouldn’t you want to do it?
Where to volunteer
There are lots of different places in which to volunteer. Charities come in all shapes and forms whether it’s shop work, charity events, volunteering at a heritage site, or in community projects. Do-it is the government’s database of UK volunteering opportunities you can look through to find volunteer opportunities local to you. There is also Silverline, a great service dedicated to combatting older people’s loneliness by providing a helpline run by volunteers.
Platinum Skies and volunteering

Volunteering can be one of the easiest ways to become a part of the local community, get to know people and get to know the new place you live. Our Monterey property is in Christchurch and Dorset has it’s own county volunteer website you can explore volunteer opportunities on.
